What is IASTM?

Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) is a specialized Registered Massage Therapy treatment that includes the use of smooth, contoured, stainless steel tools, that allow the practitioner to access deeper muscle groups and engage in more precise techniques. The tools used during these treatments can vary in size and shape depending on the specific needs of the patient as well as their unique body contours. These techniques share the same foundation as gua sha treatments, which have evolved over the years to treat a variety of conditions and injuries.

IASTM treatments can specifically target the fascia, or the tissue surrounding every structure and system within our bodies. The fascia helps our muscles, joints, and tendons move smoothly, but when injuries and inflammation occurs, the fascia stiffens with increased scar tissue. This stiffening can decrease mobility, increase discomfort and pain, and cause long-term conditions that affect your everyday life. IASTM uses the smooth edges of specialized stainless steel tools to effectively remove scar tissue and readjust the fascia. This can help with pain management and mobility.
